In craft beer, how to distinguish stout, stout and porter? Among the craft beers, there are dark beer, Stout, and Porter. Many people will feel that there is no difference between these three craft beers.

Dark beer

This is a general term, just the color, as long as the color reaches a certain value or above, it can be called dark beer.

Porter and Stout

In dark, heavy-tasting craft beers, stout and porter are intertwined, indistinguishable styles.

Stout and Porter both originated in the UK, and people would subconsciously think that these two craft beers are craft beers with a darker color, more caramel and sweet taste, but now the gap between the two is relatively large of.

Porter

Porter craft beer was first recorded in the 18th century and is a craft beer widely popular among dock porters.

From the 16th century to the early 18th century, a beer cocktail was popular in the London area. In 1730, a local winery imitated this recipe and produced craft beer with a similar taste. This craft beer quickly became popular, especially among dock workers, and was later transliterated into Porter beer.

As the UK was involved in two world wars, the UK, which was not self-sufficient in food, was in trouble, and craft beer became a luxury, so Porter beer disappeared. It wasn't until 1978 that a small craft brewery re-produced a traditional Porter beer that Porter beer gradually became known to more people.

Today, Porter refers to this traditional English beer.

Stout

Stout was used to describe beer earlier than Porter. 60 years before longshoremen used the word porter to describe beer, the word stout had appeared, and it represented a high-strength beer. So Shitao means strong and high in English.

But the development of Irish beer really extended the life of Porter and evolved the current style of Stout.

An Irish beer company brewed Ireland's first porter and was the first to try brewing stout porter with black barley after the invention of black malt.

Under the impact of the two world wars, Porter in England disappeared, but Ireland has always maintained its own style, producing high-volume craft beer, mainly Stout Porter, so that the word Stout has been specially used for Describe Porter.

Compared with traditional Porter, Stout uses more raw materials, especially the proportion of roasted barley and dark malt is greatly increased. This gives the stout a higher degree, a very strong burnt taste of roasted barley, and a more layered taste.
