If you're building or renovating a brewery, there are some special features of your flooring that could positively impact your daily work. While flooring may not be your primary consideration, installing the right brewery flooring offers numerous benefits that can ensure your operations run as smoothly as possible. While flooring and floor coatings are optional in most industries, even for aesthetic reasons, this isn't the case with brewery flooring. Like all food and beverage-related industries, breweries face a host of regulations to stay relevant in the market, many of which relate to the cleanliness of their production facilities.

Key Factors in Brewery Flooring Selection

Hygiene

Brewery floors must be free of holes, cracks, or crevices where bacteria can grow. Furthermore, they should ideally have antimicrobial properties to further prevent the growth of harmful organisms.

Moisture and Chemical Resistance

Many types of flooring deteriorate with repeated exposure to moisture or corrosive chemicals, which in turn degrades their hygienic properties. Modern flooring can prevent this. Ensure that the flooring material can withstand these chemicals and, if necessary, add a chemical-resistant coating. To prevent large-scale accidents, your flooring and coating must be able to withstand any chemicals that could cause long-term exposure.

Wet and Dry

Some areas of a brewery may be wet, while others must remain dry.

Slip-Resistant

From expensive machinery to everyday employees, brewery floors must minimize slipping, even in wet conditions. Preventing slips and falls not only saves costs from product damage but also avoids legal fees if an employee slips or is injured on the floor. Slips and falls are the most common form of injury, costing breweries up to $16,000 annually in lost sick leave and paid time off.

Thermal Shock Resistance

During the brewing process, steam and boiling water are used to produce beer, while cold water is used to rinse equipment. Brewery floors are exposed to a wide range of temperatures, from boiling hot water to near-freezing liquids. This constant temperature fluctuation can damage standard flooring and, due to the constant contraction and expansion of the material, can cause dangerous cracks and fissures.

The best way to prevent cracking in brewery floors is with a polyurethane coating. Polyurethane expands and contracts at a similar rate to concrete slabs, allowing it to expand and contract naturally without cracking or delamination. The thermal shock resistance of polyurethane coatings helps breweries around the world prevent floor cracking caused by temperature fluctuations.

Low Environmental Impact

Environmental protection is important to consumers, and breweries, especially small ones, need to demonstrate their environmental credentials to attract more conscious drinkers.

Brewery Flooring Options

Breweries should consider using certain types of floor coatings.

Some flooring types and materials breweries should consider include:

  • Epoxy coating is a thick, superglue-like adhesive used to bond various materials together. It's popular because it's affordable, durable, and easy to install. However, epoxy floors don't last long, meaning they must be resurfaced once they start to wear out.

  • Polyurethane is another popular flooring coating in the food and beverage industry because it meets all flooring requirements. It's a high-quality, long-lasting, non-slip, and hygienic option. It also seals any cracks, ensuring bacteria can't grow.

  • Methyl methacrylate is a popular choice for brewery flooring due to its fast-curing properties. However, it still offers the same advantages as other flooring systems, such as the previously mentioned polyurethane. The biggest difference between methyl methacrylate and the other flooring materials mentioned is that it comes in a variety of colors and can be enhanced with additives like quartz crystals for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

  • Metallic epoxy flooring is similar to regular epoxy flooring, but what sets it apart is its appearance. Its unique appearance and texture, resembling glass, makes it popular in breweries that attract a lot of visitors. Additionally, metal epoxy floors can be treated to make them more slip-resistant.

Brewery Cleaning and Proper Drainage

Having the right equipment and flooring systems is crucial in a brewery, so ensuring all equipment is clean and sanitized is also crucial. There are many effective cleaning and sanitization methods, but the best approach varies from brewery to brewery.

  • Point drains must be sloped and require additional force to direct the liquid to a drain in the ground. These drains are generally unsuitable for breweries.

  • Trench drains are the most commonly used drainage system, but they are generally unsuitable for breweries. They are often covered by large fences, which can deteriorate over time, leading to falls and injuries.

  • Trough drains are the most common drainage method used in breweries. These drains are long and narrow, covering the entire brewery. Due to their small size, they do not require a cover and are accessible to vehicles and pedestrians.
